Triathlon position is a unique compromise: maximize aerodynamics while preserving the legs for the run that follows. Angles differ from road cycling, and mistakes are paid for dearly on the marathon.

Pure time trial (TT) and triathlon share the aero position on aerobars, but not the same constraints. In a TT there is no run afterward: you chase the lowest, most aero position you can hold for the effort. In triathlon—especially Ironman—the position stays slightly more open to spare the hip flexors and quads for the marathon that follows. This guide covers both.

Pure TT or triathlon: the same position?

Almost—the difference comes down to the torso angle (measured relative to horizontal):

  • Pure time trial: torso as low as possible. No run afterward → drop as low as you can sustain; aero and power come first.
  • Triathlon / Ironman: torso a touch higher. To spare the hip flexors and quads for the run.

In other words, a TT rider can hold a more aggressive position than a long-distance triathlete. Staying "too upright" on a TT bike costs watts; going "too low" in an Ironman costs your legs on the run.

Hip Angle: The Critical Number

Hip angle (trunk-to-thigh closure at TDC) governs:

How to Open It

If your hip angle is too closed:

  1. Slide saddle forward: Rotates pelvis, opens hip.
  2. Raise aerobars: Less dive.
  3. Shorten aerobar extensions: Less stretch.

Width

  • Ideally equal to or slightly narrower than shoulder width.
  • Too wide = more frontal area.
  • Too narrow = discomfort, restricted breathing.

Height

  • As low as flexibility allows.
  • Caution: Lower bars close the hip angle.
  • Find the point where you can hold the position comfortably for 1+ hour (or 5+ hours for Ironman).

Length

  • Elbows centered on pads.
  • Hands reach extensions naturally.
  • Forearms roughly horizontal or slightly rising.

Straight vs. S-Bend Extensions

  • Straight: More stretched, more aero.
  • S-bend: More compact, sometimes more comfortable.

Saddle in Triathlon Position

Steep Seat-Tube Angle

TT bikes have seat-tube angles of 76–80° to:

  • Move the pelvis forward.
  • Open the hip angle.
  • Recruit more hamstrings.

Saddle Choice

A forward position = more pressure on the nose.

Options:

  • Short-nose saddle (Adamo, ISM).
  • Tri saddle with center cutout.
  • Traditional saddle with a slight nose-down tilt.

Tilt

  • Slight nose-down (1–3°) is often necessary.

Moving the saddle forward to open the hip… without raising it slightly. Result: Knee too bent, kneecap pain.

Rule: If you slide the saddle forward, check whether you also need to raise it a few millimeters.

  2. Head position (often overlooked)
  3. Arm width
  4. Equipment (aero helmet, skinsuit)

Power vs. Aero Trade-Off

An ultra-aggressive position might "save" 20 W aerodynamically but "cost" 30 W in muscular power. The optimum is individual.
