What Hip Angle Actually Means
Hip angle measures the opening between your torso and your thigh at the hip joint while pedaling—not a static photo, a dynamic value that changes throughout the pedal stroke. In bike fitting, the reference point that matters is your average riding position, not an isolated instant.
It's shaped by three things at once: saddle height, saddle setback (fore-aft position), and reach to the handlebars. Change any one of them, and hip angle moves—which is exactly why it's harder to get right than knee angle, which mostly comes down to saddle height alone.
What the Data Actually Shows

Why "Too Open" Is the More Common Problem
An overly open hip angle usually comes from one of three setups, often combined:

A closed hip angle is measured less frequently (9.8%) but tends to come with sharper symptoms—anterior hip pinching, reduced power at the top of the pedal stroke, and in aggressive positions (time trial, triathlon), lower back compensation. Typical causes: saddle too high or too far back, or a reach that's too aggressive for current hip mobility.
